There are many reasons why women choose to have their breasts lifted, including reversing the effects of gravity, loss of skin elasticity, weight loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Women who are comfortable with the size of their breasts, but seek a firmer, more youthful shape, may opt for a breast lift.
During a breast lift, excess skin is removed to raise, reshape and firm your breasts, while the nipple/areolar complex is repositioned, or sometimes reduced in size. If desired, implants may be inserted in conjunction with a breast lift to boost breast volume.
Every woman is different, so every breast operation is unique. Dr Buckland, has a special interest and expertise in breast surgery and has performed countless procedures in hospitals across Sydney.
Dr Buckland believes it’s essential for women considering breast surgery to be fully informed, which is why a personal consultation with Dr Buckland is the best way to decide what is right for your individual circumstances, body shape and desired outcome.
No decision to have surgery should be taken lightly, and Dr Buckland will be more than happy to answer the many questions you probably have, and to help you decide whether mastopexy is right for you.
Mastopexy surgery is done under general anaesthetic in hospital as either a day surgery procedure or an overnight stay. It takes about 2-3 hours. Depending on the amount of ptosis (drooping) and the amount of extra skin, the operation is done using a vertical pattern or upside down “T” incision. Dr Buckland will advise you what is best for your breast and body shape during your consultation. The nipple is repositioned into the centre of the breast and the breast itself is reshaped to a more youthful shape. Sensation and blood flow to the nipple are preserved, as are the connections to the milk ducts so that breast feeding is still possible later on.
The wounds are closed with internal dissolving sutures to get the best possible scar (see below). Waterproof dressings are used so that you can shower normally once you are up and about. It’s possible to return to most jobs 1 week after the surgery but you must restrict lifting, straining, reaching and upper body exercise for a month afterwards.
Scars are an inevitable result of surgery, but as a highly skilled, fully qualified plastic surgeon, Dr Buckland is specially trained to minimise scarring, and to ensure any scars are as inconspicuous as possible by placing them along natural skin lines and creases. Scars do fade over time, and Dr Buckland will advise you of scar treatment techniques to further reduce any long-term impact.
