There are many reasons why women choose to have their breasts reduced in size, including back pain and shoulder discomfort, self-consciousness, asymmetry, restricted physical activity, skin irritation beneath the breasts or lack of overall proportion.
There are several techniques used to reduce the size of the breasts, bringing them to a more comfortable, natural shape and size. Excess breast tissue and skin is typically removed, and the areola (pigmented skin surrounding the nipple) may be reduced and repositioned.
Every woman is different, so every breast operation is unique. Our experienced plastic surgeon, Dr Garry Buckland, has a special interest and expertise in breast surgery and has performed countless procedures in hospitals across Sydney.
Dr Buckland believes it’s essential for women considering breast surgery to be fully informed, which is why a personal consultation with Dr Buckland is the best way to decide what is right for your individual circumstances, body shape and desired outcome
No decision to have surgery should be taken lightly, and Dr Buckland will be more than happy to answer the many questions you probably have, and to help you decide whether breast reduction is right for you. .
Breast reduction surgery is done in hospital under a general anaesthetic with an overnight stay. The operation takes between 3 and 4 hours. During the procedure the breast is reduced in size, the nipple is lifted so it is centred on the breast, and the breast is shaped into a more natural contour. The aim is to maintain sensation and blood flow to the nipple, keeping the connections between the milk ducts and the nipple so that breast feeding is still possible later if you wish.
The operation can be done through either an inverted T incision or a vertical incision depending on your breasts’ shape and size.
The wounds are closed with internal dissolving sutures to get the best possible scar. No drains are needed and waterproof dressings are used so you can shower normally. Postoperative surgical bras are provided. It’s usually possible to return to most jobs 1-2 weeks after surgery – no lifting, straining, reaching or upper body exercise is recommended for 4 weeks
